Common misconceptions in IVF treatment

In vitro fertilization, which is one of the ways of assisted reproduction, has been making the baby dreams of many couples come true for many years. Stating that some stereotypical misinformation that couples applying for treatment know correctly affects patients psychologically, said Gynecology and IVF Specialist Assoc. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “In vitro fertilization treatment is not a painful process, the drugs used in the treatment do not cause weight gain, bed rest is not required after embryo transfer, and pregnancies that occur with IVF treatment do not have to be multiple pregnancies,” he said.

IVF TREATMENT IS A PAINFUL PROCESS

Saying that IVF treatment is not a painful process, contrary to what is often thought, Assoc. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “Daily drug applications are generally simple procedures that can be applied easily and do not cause any pain. Egg collection is performed under general anesthesia and no pain is felt during the procedure. Although there are very mild pains in the groin after the procedure, these pains are quickly relieved with painkillers applied in the observation room.

DRUGS USED IN IVF TREATMENT  MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT

In IVF treatments, drug applications are made to enlarge the follicles in the ovaries and the dose to be used in these drugs is determined according to the woman’s current weight, ovarian reserve and egg response in previous treatments. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “The hormones contained in these drugs are those that are already present in our body, but their doses are higher than the amounts our body produces. In addition, thanks to the advances in the production processes and technologies of these drugs, the effectiveness of the drugs used has been increased significantly and the possible side effects have been minimized.

BED REST AFTER EMBRYO TRANSFER

Stating that it is recommended to avoid heavy exercises and long-distance walking after embryo transfer, it has been shown by studies that a strict bed rest does not increase pregnancy rates. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “Avoiding stress after embryo transfer, drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet and avoiding heavy exercises are enough,” he suggested.

FROZEN EMBRYO HAS LOW SUCCESS AFTER TRANSFER

Assoc. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “In this direction, the success rates of fresh and frozen embryo transfers are similar in women with low or normal response to treatment. However, the success rate of frozen embryos is higher in women whose ovaries overreact due to reasons such as polycystic ovary syndrome, compared to fresh transfer. For this reason, the choice of the embryo transfer protocol should be made by the physician according to the response of the ovaries to the treatment or some other factors.

YOU CAN’T GET PREGNANT IN THE FIRST IVF TREATMENT

It is possible for a couple who have undergone IVF treatment to get pregnant at the first try. Speaking that pregnancy rates in IVF treatment depend on many different factors, especially the age of the woman and the ovarian reserve of the woman, Assoc. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “The main reason for the failure of the first IVF treatment is disorders related to the genetic structure of the embryo. Since the classical embryo evaluation is based on the visual evaluation of the shape and cellular structure of the embryo, the genetic structure cannot be known. It is usual for embryos obtained in IVF treatment to have abnormal genetic content at varying rates depending on age. For this reason, it is possible for some patients to be successful in the first attempt, while some patients need more than one treatment to achieve success.

BABIES CARRIED INTO THE WORLD BY IVF METHOD ARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BABIES

Stating that studies comparing babies born from embryos obtained by in vitro fertilization and babies born from spontaneous pregnancies show that there is no difference between these two groups of babies in terms of short and long term physical development, Assoc. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “There was no difference in the studies examining the long-term neurological development and school success of babies born from pregnancies with IVF, with babies born from spontaneous pregnancies,” he said.

PREGNANCY CREATED BY IVF TREATMENT MUST BE MULTIPLE PREGNANCY

Number of embryos to be transferred to women undergoing IVF treatment. It is regulated by a regulation issued by the Ministry of Health in 2010. According to this, if the expectant mother is under the age of 35, only 1 embryo can be transferred in the first and second IVF trials, and this number is limited to 2 embryos in the third and subsequent trials. Dr. Ozkan Ozdamar; “This situation can be carried out in women aged 35 and over, in the form of transferring a maximum of 2 embryos in one treatment. For this reason, there is a possibility of multiple pregnancy in women who have only 2 embryo transfers. Apart from this, although it is very rare, in some women to whom a single embryo has been transferred, the embryo divides in the uterus and causes multiple pregnancy; In this case, identical twins are formed.
